Bayelsa state Governor, Henry Seriake Dickson today, Tuesday appended his signature to the Widows, Widowers protection law of the state, while commending the Speaker, Assembly members for their contributions, service and sacrifice. His Words: Let me use this opportunity to appreciate on behalf of a grateful state, the contributions, service...s and sacrifices made by the Speaker and the entire members of our state Assembly. This Bill has brought to 50, the number of bills passed by the house of assembly. There is no single house of assembly in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that compares with the state assembly in terms of stability, maturity and productivity. The Widows, Widowers Protection laws of our state is dealing with a lot of issues, affecting cultural practices, particularly those affecting the women folk in our society, and I sincerely thank the member who sponsored this bill, Hon Agatha Agoma, Rep Ekeremor Constituency-1.

I have looked at it and I agree completely on the need to protect the women, more particularly women who find themselves in unfortunate situations. We know our cultural practices are not friendly to widows who loose their spouse's, and this bill will step in to offer them some protection. It will be unlawful for anyone to oppress any widow or widower to engage in any of the several acts stated here. I call on the ever active assembly members to consider, pass and bring to me for executive accent, the Child Rights Act, that will compliment what we have just done, as children are very vulnerable and need protection.
